LENNON'S FLYER

Hunger Games Reading Check: Ch. 13-21

1. Since all of the Career Tributes supplies and equipment were all gathered in one camp by the cornucopia, katniss and Rue decided that they were gonna take what they needed and destroy the rest. So Rue set up a decoy fire to draw all the Career Tributes away. As Katniss was going to do her part, she sees Fox face avoiding mines. Therefore, Katniss shoot an arrow at a bag of apples and sets off a chain of mines to destroy all of their stuff. They're plan was successful in that matter, but it ended up leading to Rue's Death.

2. After learning that there will be 2 victors, Katniss kind of tries to find Peeta hoping that they can both win. after making her way to a river, she finds a blood trail. After following that blood trail, she finds Peeta injured. She then cares for him and tries to take care of him. I believe that she doesn't really like him, but she likes him as a friend. Therefore, she continues to care for him and act like she loves him so that she can get a sponsor to give them supplies they need and to please the crowd.

3. As Katniss attempts to get the book bag, she encounters Clover. She therefore has to fight her and nearly gets killed doing so. Just as Clove was about to give the killing blow, Thresh, the boy tribute from district 11, pounds Clover's head in and save Katniss. Therefore, She is successful in retrieving the bag. Whats in the bag is medicine that can heal Peeta's wound and therefore save him.

4.  Throughout the Hunger Games, it is shown that Katniss has some sort of feeling towards Peeta. The Capitol Believes that this is love, but clearly it is not. Although she does care for Peeta, it is more of a "friend" love. She doesn't loves him more as a friend and as a comrade. But she does care a lot for him. "I'm careful to leave Peeta with water and the medical kit right besides him." (pg. 280) This quote here shows that she does care for him in some way. The Hunger games is a very dark event in which people turn on one another. If Katniss were like any other tribute, she would have took everything she had for herself. Instead, she ensured that he would survive too. “To this day, I can never shake the connection between this boy, Peeta Mellark, and the bread that gave me hope, and the dandelion that reminded me that I was not doomed.” This is another quote that shows that Katniss somewhat cares for Peeta. She kind of has a connection to that even though she doesn't love him, she is fond of him. Overall, this shows that Katniss may not like Peeta as a husband or boyfriend, but she is very close to him and they are really good friends.

Quotes:

1.  "I want to do something, right here, right now, to shame them, to make them accountable, to show the Capitol that whatever they do or force us to do that there is a part of every tribute they can’t own. That Rue was more than a piece in their Games. And so am I." ( pg 236-237)

2. "I spend the night, half sleeping, half lying next to Peeta, refreshing the bandage, and trying not to dwell on the fact that by teaming up with him,I've mademyself far more vunerable than when i was alone." (pg. 236)

3. "Thresh bangs the rock down hard against Clove's temple. Ints not bleeding, but i can see the dent in her skull and I know that she is a goner." (pg. 287)

Macbeth Final Essay

Many of us are driven and tempted by glory and power. We all want to be known and to have everything we could ask for. But sometimes, this lust for power isn't good for a person. It can influence us to do things against our beliefs. It can mold us into a different person than from what we really are and turn our life around the wrong way. The story of Macbeth, written by Shakespeare, shows a man that has these traits. It shows a man show driven by his lust for power that he is willing to kill the people closets to him. In the end, He learns the consequences of these horrible actions. Macbeth by William Shakespeare is a prime example of how power is a thing that can corrupt a man's intellects and virtues, and shows us that we must never allow this corruption to turn us toward evil.

In the beginning of the book, Macbeth is a war hero. He encounters three witches that inform him that he will soon become king. Because of the impatience of both himself and his wife, he is driven to kill many people so that he may reign as king. Now at the beginning, he thinks that once he becomes king, all that he will have is riches and glory. But what comes to him is just paranoia and fear. He did not act alone. His wife is the one that influenced him to do this horrible deed. She called him a coward and less than a man because he was too afraid to follow his ambitions. "What monster was it then that made you share this scheme with me? When you dared to do it, then you were a man."(act 1, scene 7, lines 47-49) He was too easily influenced to do the wrong thing. His lust for power and his fear of being a coward was much greater than his conscience. This is where he went wrong. Instead of thinking about the possibilities and following his morals and intellects, he chooses to follow what everyone else tell him and also follow the evil path. "Where's that knocking? What's happening to me, that every noise I hear scares me? Whose hands are these? They're plucking my eyes out...." (act2, scene 2, lines 58- 62). After killing people, he becomes haunted by both the spirits of his victims and the guilt that comes with murder. He was not expecting that he would feel the repercussions of his bad deeds. The un expected consequences of his actions are what changed him. It made him insane. He was no longer the person that he once was. He was no longer the friendly, kind hearted, loyal war hero.

Like all books, a great lesson can be learned from this. Macbeth represents a general man. Everyone at one point or another seeks power. This book shows that when we seek this power, we must take the righteous and truthful path. Macbeth decided not to. He decided to cheat his way to the throne. And therefore, he experienced the consequences. The consequences that drove him mad, and the ones that changed him till the moment of his death. "You can't say I did it! Don't shake your gory locks at me." (Act 3, scene 4, lines 52-53). This is an example of how Macbeth was after killing people. The guilt clouded his thoughts and caused him to have many sleepless nights and also caused him to practically go insane.  "The smell of blood is still there. All the per fumes of Arabia cannot sweeten this little hand. " (Act 5, Scene 1, lines 43-45). This is an example of how Lady Macbeth was affected. Her too was affected by the guilt of their crime. This caused her to sleep walk and go insane. Because she was one of the main influences that caused Macbeth to kill so that she could be queen, she too felt the harsh consequences that changed the type of person that she was. The book uses these two characters to show the consequences of unjust actions. You may not potentially go insane, but you will not feel the full reward of your journey. It shows that no matter what it some way, what goes around comes around. So if you take the evil pathway, then your consequences will be harsh.

This lesson can be applied to our society today. Yes, there is nothing as jurassic as murdering people for royalty (although that could still potential exist), but it exist on the level of cheating things over. When you cheat on a test, you don't feel the success and accomplishment you feel when you actually study and do the test on your own. Same thing goes with Macbeth. Our greed for glory and power drives us to cheat and be unjust. "This greed goes deeper. It has a firmer root system than short lived lust. It has been the death of many of our kings." (Act 4, Scene 3, lines 85- 88) Macbeth greed was so great that it couldn't be broken. It became a part of him. It transformed him into a paranoid, power crazy being. And this is how power can change a person. Macbeth was only human, therefore i he is like anyone of us that means greed and power can change us also. " I've almost forgotten the taste of fear. There was a time when shrieking in the night would have turned me cold... they cant shock me anymore." (Act 5, scene 5, lines 9-15) This is another way how greed and power can change you. Power leads to corruption, and when a person has too much power, they believe in different things. Mostly everyone, every human feels fear. But as you can see, Macbeth's power and greed changed him to make him no longer human.

Aside from being a violent play, a life lesson is taught through every word written. It shows that power isn't always the best thing to want. It can drive us to do horrible things that aren't worth it. Power and greed can change us and make us go against our morals and intellects. It makes us inhumane. It drove Macbeth to kill many of his colleagues and close friends, and yet he died because his goal want achieved properly. He didn't just wait patiently for his turn at the throne.  This is a lesson meant for people of every generation. It shows us that power isn't always the key to success. It shows us that it is best to take the righteous and truthful path if we do work towards some kind of power. Macbeth by William Shakespeare is a prime example of how power is a thing that can corrupt a man's intellects and virtues, and shows us that we must never allow this corruption to turn us toward evil.

Assignment on Act 2

1. I feel that he has a very good conscience and mindset, but he is too easily persuaded and tempted by all the wrong things. He knows that if he wants to be king, he must let time and the prophecy run its course. But instead of beilieving in his own belief, he allows his wife to get into his head to make him do the wrong thing. So I would say he is a coward because he isnt able to make his own decisions.

2. I feel that his future plans are whatever Lady Macbeth wants. So if she wants more power and if she wants to kill more people, he'll probably do it.

Soliloquy

Why have I done this?!
He was a great and loyal friend.
He was willing to be right by my side.
And yet, I throw away all that he has given me,
for what i want.
I let my desire and lust for power cloud my mind.
I let it blind me for the truth.
I should have listened to myself.
If I were to be king, the prophecy would need no help to do so
Yet, I cant be a coward.
I must prove that I am strong.
I cant just want something, I need to go and get it.
But was it worth it?
Was killing my friend,
and having the blood on my hands,
worth limitless power?

p. 7 Soliloquy

There are so many distractions
Relationships, Fun, and Leisure
This has what caused me to take my eye of the prize
The prize that will get me a future
A prize that will ensure my success
Now, this clear path to that prize is clouded by all my foibles
I can no longer just continue my work
For now, there is an obstacle everywhere I turn
It is as if I cannot see the path I must take.
But now, the mindset of positivity, and determination
Has shined a light
To guide me where I need to go
To get back on the right path to success.
This light awakened me from my ignorant, lazy slumber
and has prepared me to do everything necessary
to reach my goal of success.

Act 2 Macbeth Questions

1. I believe that she is very much a cold blooded murder. The reason is not only did she force her husband to do it, she also felt no remorse for her horrible deed.

"Dont brood so much." pg. 71

"Coward! Give me the daggers! Sleeping and dead people are like pictures of themselves. Only children fear a picture, even of the devil. If he's still bleeding, ill smear the faces of his servants so it will look as if they did it." pg. 73

2. She faints in act two to basically act like she really cant believe what happens and to hide her true feelings on the subject. So its basically to draw away suspicion from her and Macbeth.

"who could hold back, that had a loving heart and the courage to show it?" pg. 85

"Look after the lady." pg. 85

3. I can tell that he is very remorseful and he has a slight sense of regret toward his deed. The reason is because now he says he gets visions and horrible nightmares. He says he begins to hear and see things.

"Wake Duncan with your knocking. I wish you could." pg. 75

"Wheres that knocking? Whats happening to me, that every noise I hear scares me? Whose hands are these? Theyre plucking my eyes out...." pg. 73

4. I feel it is so that if he were to got caught, then she would have someone to blame and frame it on. Because she doesnt want the benefits of being the queen to go away, she makes macbeth do the dirty work. Also, she states that Duncan looks like her father and she couldnt bring herself to do such a horrible deed.

"If Duncan hadn't looked like my father in his sleep, I'd have done it myself." pg. 69

5. I think that he must kill the kings two sons. The reason is because in historic times, kingship and royalty would go down the legacy until there is no one in the family to take their place. So since the two princes are still alive, he must kill them.

Act 1 Macbeth Questions

1. Well, although macbeth has much power, I feel that his wife very much uses him for that. That's why she influenced him to kill King Duncan. So i would say that she is very much seductive and controlling. She only really uses Macbeth to get power.

"From now on, I know what your love is worth. Are ou afraid to matvh your acts with your ambitions? Can you want the glittering crown yet be a self confessed coward: "I'd like to, but i daren't." pg. 57

"What monster was it then that made you share this scheme with me? When you dared to do it, then you were a man." pg. 57

2. He decides to murder Duncan because his wife pretty much makes him feel that the only way to be successful is to kill him. So his wife, again. tricks him into doing what she wants. At first he didn't want to kill him, but after hearing what his wife has to say, he is forced to change his mind.

"We fail? Just screw up your courage to the uttermost, and we wont fail" pg. 59

"When you dared to do it, then you were a man." pg. 57

3. I would say that he is a man very anxious about his future prophecies. But i can tell that he always wants what he wants as soon possible. But i can tell that he knows what is good and not. The reason is because he has a very good conscience and he always questions whether or not what he is doing is good or not.

"Stop. You've told me half the story. tell me more. I know IM thane of Glamis, since, my father, died. But how can I be the thane of cawdor?" pg. 33

"[Brooding] Your children should be kings......"
"You shall be king"
" And Thane of Cawdor too. Thats what they said?" pg. 35

4. Honestly, I think he will. The reason is because in those days, framing is very much easy to get away with. But I know that something bad will happen because he got away with it. I feel that because the prophecies stated that he'll gain power in time and he didnt fulfill it properly, karma will come to hurt him.

"Who would dare to take it otherwise since we shall grieve and lament his death so loudly?" pg. 59

"Im settled on it then. All my faculties shall be devoted to this terrible deed. Let go pass the time as perfect hosts. We must conceal our false hearts behind false faces." pg. 61

5. I honestly think that he shouldn't kill Duncan. The reason is becaue the prophecy already states that he will eventually be king. So really, all he has to do is be patient. Also, he should get rid of his wife because all she does is use him.

Macbeth Anticipation Guide

Directions: Read the following statements. Write if you agree or disagree.  Write two sentences and a personal experience to support your thoughts about each statement. There are no right or wrong answers!
1.     Behind every great man is a great woman (every great man is supported, guided, helped and even pushed by a great woman).
2.     Witches, demons, and evil spirits actually exist.
3.     Sometimes it is necessary to do something wrong to get what you want.
4.     What goes around comes around (karma).
5.     Human beings are easily tempted by things they want, even if it’s wrong.
6.     If someone feels that the ruler/s of his/her country is destroying the country, that person should try to overthrow the ruler/s.
7.     There are circumstances or events that justify murdering someone.
8.     Success is worth any price you have to pay.
9.     Kings are appointed by God, and they rule as His representatives on Earth.
10.  Your astrological forecast (your horoscope) is a good indicator of how your day will go.

1. I feel that this is true and I strongly agree with this statement. The reason is because if you look at every successful person, there is always some type of women like figure in some man's life. An example of a women like figure would be a mother. I know from personal experience that my mom gives me a lot of support and helps me accomplish many things.

2. I also believe this because I heard from personal experiences that there is always and equal amount of two opposite things. So if we know that there are good spirits and deities like God, then there must be evil spirits like demons.

3. Truthfully, I am neutral on this subject because i don't really have any experience with it. But from what i know, I say it depends on the situation you are in. But i agree with this statement more than disagree because I've seen people in history and in present do horrible things to get what they want.

4. I agree with this. From personal experiences, I know that things always balance out. There is never too much of one thing. So therefore, the way you act always is done back to you.

5. I agree with this statement also. The reason is because it is human nature to always be tempted by something we want. Even if its wrong, humans still tend to have a want for it. An example would be lust. Another example would be how Hitler wanted complete and udder world domination. This was wrong because everyone should be equal, and this tempted him to kill many people.

6. I believe that they should do this. The reason is because many people work so that the country can thrive and be successful. So if one person causes everyones work to fail, then that person should not be in power.

7. In slight cases, like in cases of self defense, I guess that is would justify it. If the person Was threatening to harm you or your family it would be natural to defend yourself, Also in other cases, where the victim is in pain, it would help them to kill them so that they wouldn't feel pain no longer.

8. I disagree. The reason why is because i would only pay a price to a certain extent. This would be my personal time, effort and work. I wouldn't want my success to affect anyone else. Like I wouldn't want to pay my family as a price for success.

9. I do not believe this. The reason is because in the religion of Christianity, God created everyone equal. He didn't create anyone to rule over people. His only representatives in my opinion would be clergy, like priests and bishops.

10. I do not believe this. The reason is because an item shouldn't determine how things will turn out. You yourself should be in charge of your own destiny and work to make your day what you want it to be.

11. I am neutral on this subject because a traitor usually has their own reason for doing something. Each case has a different reason and you don't know whether its a good reason or a bad reason.

Once you are done with a partner look at the following questions and answer them together. Your answers need to be in complete sentences and you need to provide what you and your partner discussed. PROVIDE AT LEAST A PARAGRAPH PER ANSWER. Please list who your partner is.
  1. Is evil ingrained in human nature? That is, are some people just “born evil,” or is evil caused by circumstance or environment?
  2. Are our lives determined by fate, or by the acts of our free will?
  3. Is redemption truly possible? That is, is it possible to commit an act of genuine evil and truly recover from it?
  4. Is it possible to admire or respect a person whom you know has committed acts of genuine evil?
  5. Do “the ends justify the means”? That is, if one uses morally evil methods to acquire a goal, is that goal forever tainted or polluted by the actions one has taken to achieve it?

1. I do not believe that Evil is ingrained into human nature. Because everyone is able to make their own decisions and able to have their own thoughts and mindset, it is the things they do in their own life that causes them to be evil. They are not just naturally born evil. So it would be caused by circumstances and the environment. In history, there was a man that believed in something called "tabalurasa". This meant that everyones is born blank. It is the individuals own decisions and that effects of society that cause the person to be the way they are. So if they turn our evil, that is because they made the wrong decisions or the community that they lived in taught them the wrong ideals.

2. This can be a controversy because I believe that our decisions from our free will will cause us to make decisions that lead us to our fate. But I would have to say this it is or free will that determines the life we live. Fate is basically what is meant to happen to you. so you usually don't know what happens as life goes on. Therefore, Fate cannot affect your life because fate is the result of your personal decisions. So our free will is what causes fate to occur and therefore what causes the events in our lives to occur.

3. I feel that it depends. The reason is because my religion states that it can be forgiven as long as you are truly sorry. But our society dictates that you can easily loose trust and it is very difficult to redeem yourself. So it depends on the situation. Religion, Catholicism that is, states that no matter what you have done, god will always forgive you, as long as you do penance and feel true sorrow and guilt for it. But in society, people can often loose their lives due to a very evil act. But in personal opinion and reality, it would be very difficult for me to trust or forgive anyone after a genuine act of evil.

4. I think that depending on the admirers point of view, then it could be possible. If the evil person has traits and ideals that the admirers like, then yes. An example would be Hitler, he was very evil and yet people admired him because his beliefs were the same as others. He killed an entire race. But you could be brain washed into thinking and admiring a genuine evil person. People like Hitler used people's beliefs against them. He used what they believed in to get and achieve what he believed in. But in our society today, like is said, people are usually smart enough to tell whether a person is truly evil.

5. Yes, the reason is because, like karma, what goes around comes around. So if you did something bad to achieve your goal, you would never be truly satisfied becuase you know that you didn't accomplish it with your hard work. I know from personal experience that I am never truly satisfied with cheating. The reason is because you know that your own hard work and dedication didn't lead up to your goal, it was someone else's. So it is the same when evil moral methods are used. Because you know something isn't good, it taints and pollutes that feelings of success and achievement.

Night Topic Research

In the time of World War 2, The leader of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler, committed a great genocide. For the reasons of personal belief and to prove his power, he brutally murdered about 6 million Jewish people. "The Holocaust was the systematic, bureaucratic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of six million Jews by the Nazi regime and its collaborators."This event was an example of great inhumanity. The Jews, in no way, deserved the treatment that they did. Many people under his rule did not fear him, many of them did not believe in what he said. Research found that Hitler murdered them because of his own religious beliefs and that he also wanted to prove to all of Germany the extent of his power.

Therefore, this was one of his major motives. In about 1933, most of the jewish population of europe, which was 9 million, lived in nazi germany. The Nazi's viewed the Jewish population as a priority danger to their society. In fact,Adolph Hitler told them that the Jews were scheming against the Germans. Adolph was a master mind that knows how to manipulate any person around.Hitler was very smart actually, for him to convince thousands of people to torture humans he had to be smart. He put the Jews in concentration camps. These camps were very strict because Adolph was trying to prove a point and to show his power.

Reflection on the Book: Night

Night, written by elie wiesel, is a very unique and powerful book. It tells the tale that no other book can tell. It shows how the death and sadness of the holocaust emotionally, physically, and spiritually affected the Jewish people. Although much readers think that something so awful as the Holocaust cant relate to them, the life lessons learned from it can be very helpful and inspiring to everyone.

One thing that someone could learn from this book is to continue to have hope and faith, especially in times of sadness and loss. Faith sounds very religious, but even if you don't believe in God, that doesn't mean you cant have faith. People must have faith and hope that even when things are at its lowest, they have to believe that no matter what, it will get better. This is probably what kept Elie alive through such unbelievably harsh conditions. All the people around him had lost hope, therefore the already wanted to die. Faith and hope is what also keep us humane, because it allows us to see a future and value to life. Most of the prisoners became very inhumane. they only worried about their own survival. They no longer had hope that something good was going to happen and that things were going to get better. This is why their behavior was so primitive. They fought each other to the death just for a mere piece of bread.

Hope is not an easy thing to have, especially when things are at a low. These are times were a lot of things don't go your way, a time were you feel you have the worst luck. But what gets you out it is seeing a clear and bright future ahead of you. This is what kept Elie alive. Throughout events in the book, he continued to believe that there would be an end to this huge debacle. He struggled to keep the people around him positive. This is an example of what humanity needs to strive towards. Once we fail, or once something bad happens, we give up. Humans need to learn to stay positive. There is a saying. this saying is "There will always be a regression to the mean". This means that nothing will be too good or too bad for too long. Things will always tend to get back to normal. And in some cases this is true. This is why humanity must never lose faith nor hope.

Literary Check #3

1. Theme: Hope and Faith is a thing that many of us must continue to have, even in events of loss and sadness, like that of the book "Night", because it is what keeps us humane by allowing us to see a future and value in life.

Character: Hope is truly tested in times of sadness and loss, for Elie Wiesel and his father, they were proven to be the strongest after experiencing the severeness of the Holocaust.

2.
Quotes for Character Thesis:
" Lately he had wandered among us, his eyes glazed, telling everyone his weakness: ' I can't go on.. its all over'. It was impossible to raise his morale. He didn't listen to what we told him." (72)

This quote is an example how Eliezer and his father were able to keep their faith and hope high especially when  they were surrounded by people who had already given up on life. Not only did they still have their own hope, but they also tried to raise others.

"Wait a bit, Zalman. We shall be stopping soon. Were not going to run like this till the end of the world," (82)

This is another quote in which Eliezer is trying to encourage a person to remain hopeful. He expressed in hope because he did no think about how he was not going to make it, But he just knew that they were going to have to stop running at some point. He never thought about how that he was going to die. He just remained hopeful that he would survive.

" 'Don't let yourself go under,' my father said, trying to encourage him. 'You must resist. Don't lose faith in yourself."(97)

This is an example of Elizer's father showing true faith and hope. Even after starving and spending days in a freezing train ride, he continued to encourage his fellow people and show hope that things would get better soon.

" 'Father,' I said. ' Only another moment more. Soon we can lie down-in a bed. You can rest... '" (99)

This quote was the time where prisoners began to just fall asleep. Most of them were dying from lack of food and too much work. Even though that Elie did not know for sure, he tied to be hopeful and encourage his dad to keep fighting oping that there was rest and survival near.

Mother is still a young woman," my father once said. "She must be in a labor camp. And Tzipora, she is a big girl now. She too must be in a camp …"

"Here, every man has to fight for himself and not think of anyone else. Even of his father. Here, there are no fathers, no brothers, no friends. Everyone lives and dies for himself alone."

Quotes for Theme Thesis:

"Never shall I forget that nocturnal silence which deprived me, for all eternity, for all eternity, of the desire to live.  Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God  and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never" (32)

This quote can be an example of how easily people can lose faith and hope quickly. After all that Elie experienced that first night, he felt that God no longer existed. He lost the will to live. People now days can lose faith easily because of one unfortunate event.

"I did not deny God's existence, but i doubted his absolute justice." (42)

This is another quote that shows how Elie began to change his hopefulness. In the beginning of the book, he was so strong about following and learning about God. But after the first night he already doubts the very thing that he had so much faith in. This can be applied to people nowadays because they are so easy to turn against something if it doesn't go their way.

"One day when we had stopped, a workman took a piece of bread out of his bag and threw it into our wagon. There was a stampede. Dozens of starving men fought each other to the death for a few men." (95)

This is an example of how losing hope can cause you to also lose your humanity. The people fighting for this piece of bread already felt that they were not going to make it. There fore, instead of being humane, the fought and only worried about their survival because the did not have faith that things would turn out better.

"He just kept repeating that it was all over for him, that he could no longer fight, he had no more strength, no more fight." (76)

"we were masters of nature, masters of the world. We had transformed everything- death, fatigue, our natural needs. We were stronger that cold and hunger. Stronger that the guns and the desire to die. Doomed and rootless, nothing but numbers, we were the only men on earth." (87)

Literacy Check #1

1) On the book, Night, By Elie Wiesel, they talk about how the holocaust occurred and how the jews were mistreated. In the beginning of the book is when the government starts changing and making new decrees for the jews to abandon everything. They were first "deported", in which they had to live in the ghettos. Then after being moved to countless ghettos, they were then taken to Auschwitz. At Auschwitz, they were basically dehumanized and treated highly unfairly. Despite all this misfortunes happening so quickly, they continued to have optimistic conversations. The reason why they did so was because they continued to have faith and hope. They always said that they always believed that this was just very temporary and that every thing would go back to normal. They probably did this to not only help pass the time, because they had to wait long hours and weeks between everything, but it was also meant to help them feel more secure and that everything was going to be all right.

2) "From this moment, you come under the authority of the Germany army. Those of you who still have gold, silver, or watches in your possession must give them up now. Anyone who is later found to have kept anything will be shot on the spot. Secondly, anyone who feels I'll may go to the hospital car. That's all"

For this quote, it is just one piece of evidence of how the Jews were single handedly stripped of everything all at once. They had to give up basically their lives and all that was valuable to them.  When they were first asked to do this, they thought nothing of it. The just thought that the government was doing this for a good reason. But later on, they soon see that they will loose everything important to them.  They are basically treated like prisoners. But even after this quote, they continue to have optimistic conversations.

"However, Our first impressions of the Germans were most reassuring" (pg. 7)

This quote is and example of the Jews' positive mindset. When seeing German soldiers fill their streets, they didn't really think anything bad was gonna happen, even though the people informing them told them otherwise. In this entire part, people were in a " I told you" sort of mindset. They felt that they didn't have anything to fear. They felt that the Germans were here to help and protect them. This proves their optimism toward the situations that they were in.

"The yellow star? Oh well, what of it? You don't die of it..." (pg.9)

This is another example of the Jews doubt toward anything bad happening to them. They didn't realize that they had to wear the stars so that the germans knew they were Jews. They didn't realize all that was happening to them was going to lead up to something very bad. But instead they continued to have faith in what was good and be optimistic of all that they were told to do.

“Confidence soared. Suddenly we felt free of the previous nights’ terrors. We gave thanks to God.” (pg. 27)

This quote shows how quickly the Jews confidence and optimism rises after something bad has happened. It shows that they look for the good in a situation to help them feel more safe and secure. They don't realize that things continue to get worse and worse. Instead they become thankful for surviving everything they go through.

“Don’t lose hope… Have faith in life, a thousand times fate… Help each other. That is the only way to survive.” (pg. 41)

This was the quote given by their leader prisoner in which they had lost a lot of hope since a lot of bad things happened. This shows that they even in times of sorrow, They had people to make them hopeful again. But unlike the previous quotes, They realize the predicament theyre in.

Literary Check #2

1) Dehumanization is the psychological treatment of enemies or prisoners to a point were that person loses all humanity. They no longer have a humane way of thinking. They are more primal and violent instead of civilized. This leads to things like crimes and genocides. In the book "Night", you can see that the prisoners go through this process. They start losing all that makes them human. One example would be their sense of survival. Most of the prisoners only really care about their own survival An example would be when the Germans would be looking for special workers. Instead of saying their true identify, they lie to continue to stay alive. Another would be when all the prisoners are labeled. This kind of strips them of their identity, and give them just a mere number. A last example would be the beatings and mistreatment of all the Jews. The Jews are treated so harshly that The begin to lose all humanity. They simply become "dogs". Another example would be Eliezer himself. He himself said that he did not feel as deep and sorrowful anymore. When he first saw babies being burnt, he couldn't even stand to sleep and think about it. But later, he didn't even think anything when he saw that same kind of mistreatment towards other individuals.

2)

a) “I did not move. What had happened to me? My father had just been struck, before my very eyes, and I had not flicked an eyelid.” (pg. 37)

Eliezer said that he began to lose his humanity because he no longer felt anything when acts of inhumanity occurred. This was a prime example. His own father, who he very much loved, as struck and harmed. Yet he said that he did not think anything of it, he didn't even flinch. This is an example of how he began to be dehumanized.

b) The three “veterans,” with needles in their hands, engraved a number on our left arms. I became A7713. After that I had no other name.” (pg. 39)

Like I said in #1, The way that the Jews were stripped of their identities was an example of dehumanization because they no longer had their own identity. This is a psychological harm because this is one thing makes someone  who they are. If you take that away and give them just a mere number, they are just like another item instead of a living human being.

c)“At that moment in time, all that mattered to me was my daily bowl of soup, my crust of stale bread. The bread, the soup- those were my entire life. I was nothing but a body. Perhaps even less: a famished stomach. The stomach alone was measuring time.” (pg. 52)

This quote exemplifies how I said that the prisoners only began to worry about themselves and their own survival. Although it does not say anything rash like, "I would kill anyone to stay alive", I feel it still exemplifies the same idea. He didn't say something like he only cares for the well being of his family. So although its not their fault, when people are dehumanized, they became more selfish and more self caring.

d)“We didn't know what to do. Tired of huddling on the ground, in hope of finding something, a piece of bread, perhaps, that a civilian might have forgotten there.” (pg. 56)

This was another example of how people became very primitive and only worried about their survival. This shows that they struggled to stay well nourished. They always payed attention to little scraps that would keep them fed. People today, that we consider humane, barely worry about being fed and whether or not they'll have a meal. but in this book, the prisoners are never fully fed well, therefore, humanity is lot when they have to become savages just for scraps.

e) “Jealousy devoured us, consumed us. We never thought to admire him. Poor hero committing suicide for a ration or two more of soup… In our minds, he was already dead.” (pg. 59)

This is an example, again, of how people would sacrifice so much in order just to be fed. But this also talks about how the other prisoners think nothing of it. They dont worry about helping him or rather thinking good thoughts of him. As they said, he was already dead to them. This shows how they lost humanity due to dehumanization because earlier in the book, they would always have optimistic conversations. But now, they think nothing of loss and grief.

Poem Graphic

Poem Final Draft

Apollo and Mischief

There was nothing more that I hated
my hard work all diminished to dust
It was all gone
With no clear trace
But there was one definite thing
It was the work of mischief

My brother was the main suspect
The god of quickness and trouble
Always tampering with everything in his path
Destroying the composition of order
There was nothing more that aggravated me
nothing more that  set me off the edge

I confronted the wrong doer
Nothing could explain the amount of rage,
that coursed through my veins
I wanted nothing more
than to see the thief be punished
by the hand of the victim to such foolishness

"APOLLO!!" said a rupturing voice
immediately I knew that it was my father that had stopped me.
I could not bear to wait
To see the punishment that he would receive
Instead it was a simple warning
It was just a phrase to get him and I to stop

At the end of it all
My brother offered me a golden lyre
It was the most beautiful, most precious instrument
Nothing could be more wonderful, more valuable
Still, to this day, I carry this lyre
And it was a symbol of forgiveness and worth
and most of all,
Love

Allusion Poem

Apollo and Mischief

There was nothing more that he hated
his hard work all diminished to dust
It was all gone
With no clear trace
But there was one definite thing
It was the work of mischief

"Hermes" was the main suspect
The god of quickness and trouble
Always tampering with everything in his path
Destroying the composition of order
There was nothing more that aggravated
The god of the sun

He confronted the wrong doer
Nothing could explain the amount of rage,
that coursed through his veins
He wanted nothing more
than to see the thief be punished
by the hand of the victim to such foolishness

"APOLLO!!" said a rupturing voice
immediately he knew that it was his father that had stopped him.
He could not bear to wait
To see the punishment that Hermes would receive
Instead it was a simple warning
It was just a phrase to get them to stop

At the end of it all
Hermes offered him a golden lyre
It was the most beautiful, most precious instrument
Nothing could be more wonderful, more valuable
Still, to this day, Apollo carries this lyre
And it was a symbol of forgiveness and worth
