Quotes for Character Thesis:
" Lately he had wandered among us, his eyes glazed, telling everyone his weakness: ' I can't go on.. its all over'. It was impossible to raise his morale. He didn't listen to what we told him." (72)
This quote is an example how Eliezer and his father were able to keep their faith and hope high especially when they were surrounded by people who had already given up on life. Not only did they still have their own hope, but they also tried to raise others.
"Wait a bit, Zalman. We shall be stopping soon. Were not going to run like this till the end of the world," (82)
This is another quote in which Eliezer is trying to encourage a person to remain hopeful. He expressed in hope because he did no think about how he was not going to make it, But he just knew that they were going to have to stop running at some point. He never thought about how that he was going to die. He just remained hopeful that he would survive.
" 'Don't let yourself go under,' my father said, trying to encourage him. 'You must resist. Don't lose faith in yourself."(97)
This is an example of Elizer's father showing true faith and hope. Even after starving and spending days in a freezing train ride, he continued to encourage his fellow people and show hope that things would get better soon.
" 'Father,' I said. ' Only another moment more. Soon we can lie down-in a bed. You can rest... '" (99)
This quote was the time where prisoners began to just fall asleep. Most of them were dying from lack of food and too much work. Even though that Elie did not know for sure, he tied to be hopeful and encourage his dad to keep fighting oping that there was rest and survival near.
Mother is still a young woman," my father once said. "She must be in a labor camp. And Tzipora, she is a big girl now. She too must be in a camp …"
"Here, every man has to fight for himself and not think of anyone else. Even of his father. Here, there are no fathers, no brothers, no friends. Everyone lives and dies for himself alone."
Quotes for Theme Thesis:
"Never shall I forget that nocturnal silence which deprived me, for all eternity, for all eternity, of the desire to live. Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never" (32)
This quote can be an example of how easily people can lose faith and hope quickly. After all that Elie experienced that first night, he felt that God no longer existed. He lost the will to live. People now days can lose faith easily because of one unfortunate event.
"I did not deny God's existence, but i doubted his absolute justice." (42)
This is another quote that shows how Elie began to change his hopefulness. In the beginning of the book, he was so strong about following and learning about God. But after the first night he already doubts the very thing that he had so much faith in. This can be applied to people nowadays because they are so easy to turn against something if it doesn't go their way.
"One day when we had stopped, a workman took a piece of bread out of his bag and threw it into our wagon. There was a stampede. Dozens of starving men fought each other to the death for a few men." (95)
This is an example of how losing hope can cause you to also lose your humanity. The people fighting for this piece of bread already felt that they were not going to make it. There fore, instead of being humane, the fought and only worried about their survival because the did not have faith that things would turn out better.
"He just kept repeating that it was all over for him, that he could no longer fight, he had no more strength, no more fight." (76)
"we were masters of nature, masters of the world. We had transformed everything- death, fatigue, our natural needs. We were stronger that cold and hunger. Stronger that the guns and the desire to die. Doomed and rootless, nothing but numbers, we were the only men on earth." (87)
